Ask the Experts about Hepatitis and HIV Coinfection
Why are they not doing more drug testing for people who are co-infected both with HIV/HCV infections. It seems like drug testing are available for people who have HIV only Doctors keep saying another 2 years. At that point my immune system may be compromised and not be able to fight any new drugs for HCV. I have already been on Intefergen and Pegaysis with no sucess.
Do you see any progress for co-infected inviduals? new drug.
Thank you for understanding and what I have to go through.

Response from Dr. McGovern
Don't despair because drug trials are now going to include some HIV/HCV coinfected patients. I am hoping we will having something new to use - in addition to interferon and ribavirin - in about 2 to 3 years.
In the meantime, be very adherent with your HIV medications. Several studies have shown that liver fibrosis is slower in patients who have good HIV control compared to those who don't.
