Response from Dr. Henry
Life expectancy from the HIV/AIDS perspective is very good for persons doing well on an effective HIV regimen (undetectable virus and CD4 > 500). Non-AIDS conditions such as heart disease, cancer, liver disease, accidents, stroke, other infections make up most of the life-threatening conditions for HIV+ patients doing well on treatment. Thus life expectancy depends on many factors (including current age and family genetics)not related to HIV situation. There is some data that life expectancy for HIV+ persons doing well on treatment can live for many decades possibly approaching the normal life expectancy for HIV- persons. KH
