Loreen Willenberg is a 16-year HIV survivor from California. She is part of a tiny group of people with HIV that scientists call "elite controllers." These are people who have never had a detectable viral load, although they've never taken HIV meds.
"When I was diagnosed I had to find a way to turn this horrible thing, this negative thing, into a positive," she recalls. "I could sit there and cry and let this thing eat me alive, or I could celebrate my life and beat it. That was my choice."
"I would push the message that in order for us to get rid of this disease, we have to look at the stigma that's attached to it and the discrimination that's going on globally."
